Workshop on Worldwide IP for Plants set for Sept. 8-9

The CIOPORA Academy's first U.S. workshop on plant breeders' rights will take place in Watsonville, Calif.


The CIOPORA Academy will make its U.S. debut in California with a 2-day, small group educational workshop. The event will take place Sept. 8-9 at Driscoll's Cassin Ranch in Watsonville, Calif.

The event will offer six 'Modules' on today's important topics relating to intellectual property in horticulture. Modules will include:

1.            Updates on Plant Patents in the U.S. and Utility Patents

2.            Basic Principles of Trademark Protection

3.            Basic Principles of Plant Breeders' Rights

4.            Basics of Licensing of PBR and Plant Patents

5.            New Developments in PBR

6.            Suitability and Use of Variety Denomination and its Relation to Trademarks

On the evening of Sept. 8, participants will be invited to a networking dinner at the Shadowbrook Restaurant near Santa Cruz (transportation included).

The CIOPORA Academy was launched by CIOPORA, the International Community of Breeders of Asexually Reproduced Ornamental and Fruit Varieties. The academy provides a specialized training and certification program for individuals seeking to expand their knowledge of intellectual property protection in the field of horticulture and advance their career. The format is small group learning, with 10-15 participants in each 'classroom.'
