CANBY, OR – Terra Nova Nurseries has presented a sneak peek of a new variety named Coleus Terra Nova ‘Quetzal’. This coleus has a fast growth rate and finish time, and is a breeding breakthrough variety boasting an impeccable mounding, tight and dwarf habit. It is the newest addition to the company’s Terra Nova Collection.
Like its predecessors Coleus ‘Macaw’ and Coleus ‘Lovebird,’ Coleus ‘Quetzal’ was named for a bird. Quetzal birds have iridescent, colorful bodies and are known for their long feathery wings and tails. Coleus ‘Quetzal’ also has striking color showcased in its lime-green leaves with purple-brown edges. The variety’s foliage is bright, colorful, serrated, and deeply lobed. The leaves are beautifully marked with unusual interest.
Coleus Terra Nova ‘Quetzal’ offers a finish time to 4” in three to four weeks, and it is self-branching. Its adorable size makes it perfect for small containers, fairy gardens or as an attractive houseplant. The variety has a foliage height of 10”, foliage spread of 12”, and it thrives in shade to part shade.
This variety requires well-drained soil with moderate organic content. Neither pinching, nor Plant Growth Regulators (PGRs) are required.
The most active growing season is spring, though the variety blooms in August, September and October, making it an excellent plant for late summer and fall. It provides a charming replacement for impatiens.
Terra Nova Nurseries has created a “Plant Profile” page and “Grower Recipe” specific to this new variety so growers can learn more about growing habit, plant characteristics, fertilization recommendations, water requirements, and other insights provided by the breeding team.
