Researchers use recycled glass to grow hydroponic crops

Researchers at University of Arizona in Tucson and University of Wageningen in the Netherlands are currently conducting hydroponic greenhouse trials with tomatoes and cucumbers grown in a substrate made primarily from recycled glass bottles.

Developed by Earthstone International in Santa Fe, N.M., the porous glass foamed material can be manufactured with specific internal pore size and structure to meet the water retention and aeration requirements of the plants, different production methods and a variety of climate zones. Trials are also being conducted with ornamental plants in commercial greenhouses and nurseries.
