Plug Connection in Vista, Calif., is the newest U.S. grower to become MPS-ABC certified. Owner Tim Wada said that the ornamental young plant producer was the first operation in this industry segment to become certified organic so it made sense for his company to pursue sustainability certification. The company produces over 3,000 different varieties of annual and perennial plugs and vegetative liners.
“We chose MPS because we like the idea of being able to compare ourselves with growers who run similar operations,” Wada said. “We recycle whatever we can, including paper, cardboard, plastic trays, capture internally generated water run-off and are certified organic for our herbs and vegetables.”
MPS has certified growers in over 50 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. Wada said he chose the MPS program because of its grower-driven mindset and that he was able to compare his company with growers who run similar operations.
