PORTLAND, Ore. -- Today is the first day of the 44th annual Northwest Agricultural Show, which attracts more than 200 exhibitors from the Northwest, across the country, and around the world. The show runs from Jan. 29 to Jan. 31. Show hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday. The show takes place at the Portland Expo Center, 2060 N. Marine Drive, Portland, Ore.
The NW Ag Show is hosting the Oregon Association of Nurseries' Seminar Series. Educational seminars will take place on Jan. 30th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The schedule has been submitted to Oregon and Washington for recertification credits.
The OAN Seminar Series will feature three educational sessions. From 10 a.m. to noon, attendees can learn about the latest on box blight and impatiens downy mildew from Jay W. Pscheidt, Extension Plan Pathology Specialist, and Luisa Santamaria, Assistant Professor, Oregon State University.
Dr. Pscheidt will cover the new research unfolding on box blight in North America. This will include identification, cultivar susceptibility and management. Dr. Santamaria will present information on identification and management of Impatiens Downy Mildew. Registered pesticides will be covered for both of these new diseases. A discussion session at the end of the program will help answer individual questions.
From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Jeffrey Jenkins, Professor, Environmental and Molecular Toxicology, Oregon State University, will help you understand pesticide drift with an empthe protection of water resources. The discussion will focus the relationship between pesticide application technologies, pesticide physical and chemical characteristics, site characteristics (i. e., soils, cropping practices, ground and surface water resources) and the potential for adverse impacts on water quality and the aquatic community.
From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., Dr. Ramesh Sagili, Assistant Professor, Apiculture, Oregon State University, will cover bee-friendly insecticide management. This presentation will discuss current challenges associated with honey bee health; pesticides of concern to bees; sub-lethal, additive and multiple exposure concerns; methods of exposure including misapplication and spray drift; pesticide poisoning symptoms; pesticide risk assessment; and how applicators, growers and beekeepers can reduce pesticide poisoning of bees.
The Northwest Ag Show is produced by the Northwest Horticultural Congress and is the result of a partnership between the Oregon Horticultural Society, the Oregon Association of Nurseries, and the Oregon Nut Growers Society.
The goal of the NW Ag Show is to educate the agricultural industry in the very latest equipment, pesticides, business practices and more. The above organizations hold their annual meetings and grower meetings in conjunction with the show dates.
Pricing for one session is $15 for students, $25 for OAN members and $30 for non-members. For both the morning and afternoon sessions, the pricing is $25 for students, $35 for OAN members and $45 for non-members. The price includes admittance into the NW Ag Show itself.
