HOCKESSIN, Del. – Mt. Cuba Center’s research report, “Coreopsis for the Mid-Atlantic Region” received the 2016 Media Awards Gold Medal of Achievement for Best Overall Trade, presented by GWA: The Association for Garden Communicators.

This national award recognizes individuals and companies who achieve the highest levels of talent and professionalism in garden communications. The 2016 competition had more than 250 entries in 56 categories. Award-winners competed for best of group in the areas of writing, photography, electronic media, publishing and trade.

Mt. Cuba Center’s report, written by research horticulturist George Coombs, received the Gold Medal of Achievement for his trade publication entitled “Coreopsis for the Mid-Atlantic Region.” This and other research reports from Mt. Cuba Center's Trial Garden can be read here.

“The GWA Media Awards showcase the writers, photographers, editors, publishers and trade companies that have pursued excellence in gardening communication in print or electronic communications,” says Kirk Brown, president of GWA. “The Media Award winners have been judged by industry experts and show significant distinction and merits that exemplify exceptional work.”

The Trial Garden report, “Coreopsis for the Mid-Atlantic Region,” details the results of a three-year study on coreopsis. Because of the recent surge in popularity of the plant – and mixed results in the vitality of some selections within the genus - plant experts at Mt. Cuba Center observed the growth habits, vitality and ecological value of 94 different selections of perennial and annual coreopsis. The newly report ranks the top-performing cultivars for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Mt. Cuba Center is a Delaware botanical garden focused on native plants and ecosystems. Its Trial Garden evaluates native plants and their related cultivars for their horticultural and ecological value. The goal of this research is to provide gardeners and the horticulture industry with information about superior plants for the mid-Atlantic region as well as highlight the important ecosystem services native plants provide.

Since the early 1980s, the GWA Media Awards program has recognized outstanding writing, photography, graphic design and illustration for books, newspaper stories, magazine articles and other works focused on gardening. In recent years, the awards program has expanded to include on-air talent, production and direction for radio, television, video, Internet and other electronic media.
