Lowe's Companies Inc. (NYSE: LOW) reported net earnings of $404 million for the quarter ended Oct. 29, 2010, a 17.4 percent increase from the same period a year ago.
Sales for the quarter increased 1.9 percent to $11.6 billion, up from $11.4 billion in the third quarter of 2009. Comparable store sales for the third quarter increased 0.2 percent.
During the quarter, Lowe's opened 10 stores. As of Oct. 29, 2010, Lowe's operated 1,734 stores in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The Home Depot (NYSE: HD) reported net earnings of $834 million for the third quarter of fiscal 2010, compared with net earnings of $689 million in the same period of fiscal 2009.
Sales for the third quarter totaled $16.6 billion, a 1.4 percent increase from the third quarter of fiscal 2009.
Comparable store sales for the third quarter of fiscal 2010 increased 1.4 percent.
At the end of the third quarter, the company operated 2,244 retail stores.
