New public botanical garden to open in N.C.

KERNERSVILLE, N.C. – April 8th will mark the opening of the Piedmont Triad's newest and most diversely themed public botanical garden. The weekend-long grand opening of Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden will include appearances by noted gardening experts from across the country. There will also be guided tours, music, entertainment, plenty of food, and a behind-the-scenes peek at the nursery and greenhouses.

"We are very excited about bringing this spectacular garden to life," said Todd Lasseigne, executive director of the garden. "We'll be offering a variety of activities that will be of interest to everyone from school children to botanical scholars. More than 25,000 bulbs will be blooming, so we invite the public to come have fun, learn about the plants and flowers, and just enjoy this beautiful garden."

Paul J. Ciener Botanical Garden is located adjacent to downtown Kernersville on a seven-acre lot where the public will be able to tour seven different gardens:

• Pattern Garden – a formal garden with seasonal displays of bulbs and tropical plants
• Perennial Border – a street front planting with year-round interest
• Pleached-Hornbeam Walk –  a formal tree-lined walkway connecting the Welcome Center to the Pattern Garden
• Parking Gardens – whimsical plantings surrounding and greening the parking lot
• Annual Border – a second street front planting, changing throughout the year
• Kitchen Garden – a garden celebrating our fruit, vegetable, and herb plant heritage
• Patio Terrace – a formal bluestone terrace with seasonal container plantings

The Triad's newest public garden was endowed by the late Paul J. Ciener, a local businessman and philanthropist. The Garden is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt educational organization supported through memberships and private donations.
