Horticulture student builds website to introduce new generation to UGA Campus Arboretum

University of Georgia (UGA) horticulture student Kendall Busher took an interest in showcasing the campus’ vast array of trees, and in doing so created an interactive walking tour. After completing a woody plant identification course in the spring of 2019, she developed a way so her classmates to identify them, too.

The campus is an arboretum, which makes the project even more special. However, many students are unaware of the arboretum’s significance. Busher’s virtual tour marks a turning point in navigating the types of trees found there.

Busher used two different components to create the virtual walking tours: geographic information system (GIS) technology and Storymap, a software program. In total, Busher created three different tours for the different areas of the campus – northern, central and southern. The virtual tour includes a photo of the tree, along with a brief description and history.
