Speichert, 48, of Bloomington, Ind., was born in El Paso, Texas. He lived in New York and Minnesota before moving with his family to Cedar Lake, Ind. He graduated from Purdue University, West Lafayette in 1984.
Greg was an internationally recognized horticulturist and plantsman with five plant patents to his credit. Best known as an expert in water plants, he co-authored the Encyclopedia of Water Garden Plants with his wife, Sue.
Greg was director of Hilltop Gardens at Indiana University from August 2007 until his death.
