On March 7, all four publications in the GIE Media Ornamental Group — Garden Center, Greenhouse Management, Nursery Management and Produce Grower — were recognized by The American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) with 14 awards across the four publications.
Graphic designer Tiana Kropko was named both a national and regional finalist in the Front Cover-Photo category for the cover of the November 2018 issue of Nursery Management with the headline ‘Ahead of the curve’. Nursery Management managing editor Matt McClellan was named a regional finalist in the Print - Technical Article category for his story ‘Betting on biochar’.
Garden Center editor Michelle Simakis was recognized as both a national and regional finalist in the All Content —- Company Profile category for her story titled ‘A modern vision.’The story features Colonial Gardens, a garden center that is reinventing the IGC model by combining plant retail, local food and agritourism, with a focus on experience, education and entertainment.
Additionally, Garden Center art director Stephanie Antal was recognized as a national and regional finalist in the Infographics category. Antal was also recognized in the Opening Page/Spread-Photo category for her work on the story ‘In it together’.
Greenhouse Management graphic designer Allison Krieg was recognized as both a national and regional finalist in the Front Cover-Photo category for the cover of the February 2018 issue of the magazine with the headline ‘As the smoke clears.’ Assistant editor Chris Manning was also recognized as a regional finalist in the General Interest category for ‘As the smoke clears’ — a story about greenhouse businesses moving past the December 2017 Thomas Fire in California.
In addition, Krieg was recognized as a regional finalist in the Front Cover-Illustration category for Produce Grower’s 2018 State of the Industry report. Manning was recognized as a regional finalist in the Trade Show/Conference Coverage category for his story ‘Atlanta’s investment in urban agriculture.’
Finally, Produce Grower senior editor Patrick Williams was recognized as a regional finalist in the Company Profile category for his story ‘Growing 'up' with cucumbers’ from the June 2018 issue of the magazine. The story profiled Big Marble Farms in Alberta, Canada, and told the story of how the Cramer family has shaped the business.
The level of regional winners — gold, silver or bronze — will be announced at regional banquets across the U.S. starting in April. National gold, silver and bronze winners and the Overall Excellence winners will be announced at the National Azbee Awards of Excellence banquet, held in conjunction with GenerationB2B, the 2019 ASBPE National Conference at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Fla., on May 9-10.
