Double petunias used to have a bad reputation. They were later to flower and messy to deadhead and maintain. After a heavy rain, they were just unsightly as soaked blooms became soggy and slimy.

But the early flowering Surfinia Summer Double petunias from Suntory Flowers have been bred to be dramatically different. Plants produce mounds of tightly held flowers that shed water with ease. The need for deadheading is dramatically reduced as fresh flowers cover old and dead blooms discreetly tuck away.

The series debuted with Rose, Pink and White in 2012 and the plants have proven their performance in greenhouses and landscapes for three seasons. The hot new color for 2016 is Salmon, a unique shade that will captivate your customers. I will confess it is my personal favorite, the one I was drawn to at Suntory’s breeding station in Japan.

Great to grow

Surfinia Summer Double petunias represent the most modern genetics and can be timed nicely along with popular Surfinia trailing varieties Deep Red and Heavenly Blue. Rose, Pink and White are a perfect match but Salmon is a week earlier.

Summer Doubles also work great in all container sizes, from 4-inch pots all the way up to the largest hanging baskets and urns. They have a compact, mounding habit that is very manageable to grow. Plants finish from liners in 4-6 weeks for 4-inch pots; 7-8 weeks for 6-inch pots and 10-12 weeks for 10-inch hanging baskets.

Shades of pink, white and salmon are perfect for Easter and Mother’s Day. The double flower form lends itself to upscale treatments and designer pot covers to drive impulse sales. Mix Summer Double varieties together in combinations to command a premium. Summer Double White makes a nice mounded filler and can bring new dimensions to patriotic combos with red and blue varieties.

Superb in landscapes

The Surfinia brand was built on superior garden performance, spring through fall, in containers, beds and hanging baskets. Surfinia Summer Doubles sizzle all summer and retain the double flowers under very high temperatures. Last summer in the middle of June, they withstood temperatures approaching 100 degrees at Young’s Plant Farm in Alabama and Metrolina Greenhouses in North Carolina. And during rainy weeks all over, they quickly recover.

Plants retain their compact mounding habit in the ground, reaching a height of 12-16 inches with a spread of 40-48 inches. Choose sites with full or partial sun.
