Starting Saturday, July 15, sessions of all types will be available, and to help you narrow your search, we spoke with four presenters about what attendees can expect from their sessions. As always, check your show guide once you arrive. Times and locations are subject to change.
Session: Assessing the state of the art and science of buddleia breeding with a focus on sterility and regulation
When: Sunday, July 16 at 9:30-10:20 a.m. Where: Room C170
Ryan Contreras is a professor and associate head at Oregon State University, Department of Horticulture. While Ryan was getting his studying at North Carolina State, he worked with Dennis (Denny) Werner who is among the world’s leaders in woody plant breeding, particularly in buddleia. Some of the first research that Ryan ever conducted was looking at the chromosomes of honeycomb buddleia. At his Cultivate session, “Assessing the state of the art and science of buddleia breeding with a focus on sterility and regulation,” Ryan will discuss the new buddleia breeding work that’s been done and aligning that with what’s makes sense for regulation based on what the data shows in these cultivars.
Session: Dealing with major armored and soft scales in nurseries and landscapes
When: Monday, July 17 at 9:30-10:30 a.m. Where: Room A223
Extension specialist in Entomology and IPM, Stanton Gill, will discuss the lifecycle of crape myrtle bark scale and Japanese maple scale, the best control techniques and how to monitor for it at his cultivate session, “Dealing with major armored and soft scales in nurseries and landscapes.”
Session: Day-to-Day Marketing for Small Businesses
When: Tuesday, July 18, 8-9 a.m. Where: Union Station Ballroom C
Cassie Flynn is marketing director at Ashcombe Farm and Greenhouses, and she also runs her own business, Harken Consulting. Her session “Day-to-Day Marketing for Small Businesses” will provide a guide to marketing your green industry business when you have no time and little to no resources.
Session: Box tree moth update from western New York
When: Tuesday, July 18 at 9:30-10:30 a.m. Where: Room A120
Alejandro Del-Pozo, assistant professor of entomology at Virginia Tech University, will discuss the data collected on the box tree moth in Niagara County, New York. From June to October in 2022, a Virginia Tech research team documented the fluctuation of densities for this invasive pest utilizing adult trapping and visual examinations. Additional field observations on the biology and ecology of this insect in its new U.S. invasive range will be shared during this presentation. Del Pozo will be returning to Niagara County in early June with his team, and he’s looking forward to presenting some updated data and new findings at Cultivate.
