Jonathan Pedersen, Dan Hinkley to speak at Farwest Show 2016

The two will speak on digital marketing for today’s consumer and underused plants in the landscape.

Wilsonville, Ore. - The 2016 Farwest Show, August 25-27, in Portland, OR, has added Jonathan Pedersen, chief development officer at Monrovia, and Dan Hinkley of Heronswood Nursery to the speakers agenda as part of this year’s educational program.

Pedersen’s address, "Marketing in the Digital Age: Reaching Today’s Time-starved Consumers," assesses the influence of digital marketing on today's marketing strategies and tactics. Social media is having huge impact on the ways we reach consumers and Pedersen will explain why digital marketing needs to be an ever-increasing part of marketing activities in order to reach today’s garden center customer and the next generation of gardeners.

Hinkley’s session, "Plants with Promise," will offer perspectives on ways consumers can be more adventurous in their gardening without sacrificing durability, value, and adaptability of chosen plants. Nursery growers and landscapers may find special interest in Hinkley’s examples from his inventory that illustrate trees, shrubs, vines, and perennials deserving greater use in the landscape.

Pedersen brings more than 25 years of experience to Farwest 2016. With involvement from retail to marketing to intellectual property, he has a unique ability to merge homeowner insight with industry know-how. A native of New Zealand and today a full-time resident of Minnesota, he understands the challenges of home gardeners.

Hinkley, consultant and Director of Heronswood Nursery, has gardened in the Pacific Northwest for over 30 years and has studied plants in the wilds of the northern and southern hemispheres. He and partner Robert L. Jones founded Heronswood in 1987 with a mission to study and cultivate rare and unusual plants.

Sponsored by Monrovia, Pedersen will speak on Thursday, August 25, 8-9am, in Room B110-112. Also sponsored by Monrovia, Hinkley’s talk will be given Thursday, August 25, 10-11a, in Room B113-114.
