Ornamental grasses

Emerald Coast Growers adds four varieties to its native line.

The newest varieties in the Native Wonders North American native grasses program include:

Andropogon glomeratus (bushy beard bluestem)
Great texture and presence with a sturdy, upright habit in plants that grow 2 to 4 feet tall. Green leaves turn a beautiful copper-orange in fall and retain color well into winter. Excellent in groupings or as a specimen. Full sun, Zones 5-9

Bouteloua curtipendula (sideoats grama grass)
Noted for its distinctive arrangement of oat-like seed spikes suspended from one side of the stem. Purplish-tinged flowers grace narrow, bluish-gray arching leaves. Foliage turns golden-brown for fall, then develops orange and red hues. Plants grow 24 to 36 inches tall and are great in masses. Full sun, Zones 3-10

Carex pensylvanica (Pennsylvania sedge)
Lovely soft, curling pale green foliage turns light brown for winter. A superior groundcover, use it in masses to soften and brighten a damp, shady area. At 8 to10 inches, great in containers too! Full sun to partial shade, Zones 4-9

Sporobolus heterolepis (prairie dropseed)
Graceful and upright with arching emerald green blades, this fine-textured grass features delicately fragrant blooms for fall. Foliage turns gold orange in autumn and fades to creamy white for winter. Plants grow 2 to 3 feet tall. Full sun, Zones 3-9

The Native Wonders program now features 28 varieties of ornamental grasses and perennials available in sizes from the jumbo 21 landscaping plug to the economical 128 cell tray.
