Volunteers from Nursery Management and its sister publications, Lawn & Landscape and Green Industry Supply Chain Management helped install a landscape as part of the PLANET Day of Service. The April 22 project was organized by the Ohio Landscape Association, and the volunteers were a mixture of green industry supporters like Project EverGreen, professional landscapers, and media members.
The project took place at Valor Home, a 30-bed rehabilitative home for previously homeless veterans. The volunteers were tasked with bed preparation, tree and shrub planting, grading and seeding. The editors were well supervised by the pros.

Volunteers at work.
Valor Home, located in Akron, Ohio, is a place where veterans can receive the help they need and learn the skills to become self-sufficient again. It is a new construction project funded by grants and matching donations including in-kind donations – such as the landscape.
Plant materials were provided by several Northeast Ohio nurseries. The volunteers planted Buxus ‘Green Velvet’ from Willoway Nurseries, Spirea japonica ‘Goldmound’ from Davis Tree Farm and Nursery, Berberis thunbergii ‘Crimson Pygmy’ from Gilson Gardens, hydrangea and Taxus Bobink from Lake County Nursery, two dwarf globe blue spruce trees from Herman Losely & Son.
Davey Tree also provided and installed 11 trees as part of the project.
Topsoil was provided by Kurtz Bros. and mulch was provided by Sagamore Soils.

The finished product.
