ASCFG names Coppertina Ninebark among 2011 Cut Flowers of the Year

The Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (ASCFG) has named Proven Winners' Coppertina Ninebark among the “2011 Cut Flowers of the Year.”  Coppertina was the winner of the woody category.

Coppertina Ninebark (Physocarpus opulifolious) is a new hybrid between Dart's Gold and Diabolo that flushes an attractive copper in spring and transforms to a rich red in summer. Soft pink flowers line the gently arching branches in early summer. Tiny blossoms appear on top of reddish-brown leaves in April in warmer climates. In the cool/cold areas of its range, you’ll see flowers in mid-summer.

The foliage reddens as the season's progress. The flower buds are set during the summer, so don't cut it back late in the season. Coppertina Ninebark enjoys a wide range of hardiness, from USDA Zones 3 to 8.

This is the second shrub from Proven Winners to win this award in 5 years. ‘Limelight’ Hydrangea was recognized by the ASCFG as “2007 Fresh Cut Flower of the Year,”
