Intrinsic Perennial Gardens Inc. introduced its second vegetative cultivar of Big Bluestem.
Andropogon gerardii ‘Red October’ PPAF is a native ornamental grass that was selected for finer foliage along with burgundy red fall color that turns scarlet after a frost in fall. In August with cool nights the tips of the foliage turn red and add to the red flowers and stems. As fall progresses the color deepens until October when plants are almost entirely red.
The upright clumping plants grow 6 feet tall and prefer a well drained soil in full sun. 'Red October' is hardy in Zones 3-9.
