Fla. Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Div. of Plant Industry, has reported that 40 additional finds of a new exotic whitefly, Aleurodicus rugioperculatus, have been made within Miami-Dade County. The insect was first discovered in Miami-Dade County on March 11, 2009, by a FDACS DPI inspector. It is thought to be native to Central America.
Adults are approximately 1-inch long, resembling the adults of the giant whitefly, Aleurodicus dugesii, and spiralling whitefly, Aleurodicus dispersus. USDA-APHIS taxonomist Gregory Evans said this new species presents a potential pest risk due to its broad host range and probable lack of natural enemies in Florida. Indications are its pupae can be found throughout the year.
