Twenty-five plants have been selected for 2011 Rhododendron of the Year honors by the American Rhododendron Society.
The awards are designed to help gardeners select plants that have historically done well in American Rhododendron Society members’ gardens. They are drawn from the society’s “Good-Doer” lists, compiled by local chapters throughout North America.
The 2011 winners include two rhododendrons that were selected in two regions and four species deciduous azaleas. Awards are given for elepidote and lepidote rhododendrons and for deciduous and evergreen azaleas in each region. One vireya rhododendron is selected each year.
The elepidote winners are:
North Eastern: ‘Janet Blair’
Mid-Atlantic: ‘Brown Eyes’
Southeastern: ‘Solidarity’
Great Lakes: ‘Rona Pink’
South Central: ‘Brown Eyes’
Northwestern: ‘Lem’s Cameo’
Southwestern: ‘Fort Bragg Glow’
