I like incorporating perennials with vertical flowers in my design combinations, and the wide range of speedwells (Veronica sp.) come to mind when seeking out that “color verticality” in late spring and early summer. While I’ve grown and observed many speedwells over the years, I can’t be without the variety ‘Pure Silver’ for that perfect combination of ornamental foliage and flower power. When sited and settled into a good spot, this performer is simply top notch.

Native to Eastern Europe and Russia, this species blooms for about four weeks in late June into July. Featuring violet-blue flowers on terminal racemes, the flowering height reaches 24-28 inches when in full bloom. However, before, during and after, these beautiful flowers — the silver, tomentose leaves — are absolutely striking. These narrow, lance-shaped, toothed leaves are 3 inches long, and the foliage clump tops out at about 12-14 inches with the flowers extending the height. The flowers work well with the silver foliage and will also attract bees and butterflies. Additionally, the flowers are nice in arrangements and spent flowers can be removed if desired.
‘Pure Silver’ prefers full sun, but light shade is acceptable. While not picky about soil pH, this plant does need excellent drainage, and with a shallow rooting zone, it is intolerant of dry conditions. Medium soil moisture with good drainage is ideal. Overly wet or poorly drained soils should be avoided, and this plant does struggle in areas with high heat and areas with voluminous rainfall (or too much overhead irrigation). With no serious insect or disease issues, this perennial is also deer resistant. Its primary sensitivity is to poorly-drained soils that may promote root rot.
While my description likely made this perennial sound needy, when properly situated in the landscape and kept happy, Veronica ‘Pure Silver’ is mesmerizing for both the foliage and flowers and has an impressive longevity and presence in the garden. This beautiful speedwell selection was introduced by Brent Horvath of Intrinsic Perennial Gardens (Hebron, Illinois), and Brent is known for promoting the best of the best. ‘Pure Silver’ speedwell is no exception. To grow it is to love it!
