Laburnum x watereri, or golden-chain tree, puts on a command performance in the landscape, although it’s short lived. This small, deciduous tree is bursting with hanging clusters of sunny yellow flowers. It begins to flower in mid- to late-May and continues nonstop for about 2 weeks. Granted, that’s not a long time, but while the golden-chain tree is in flower, there’s very little that can rival it. Because of its grand flower display, it could command a high price at wholesale and retail. However, it will require excellent marketing and POP because IGCs will want to sell it before it flowers. Growers, if ICG customers are asking for some valuable, niche products, this could be your answer.
At maturity, it grows to about 12 feet tall with an 8-foot spread.
Golden-chain tree is best suited for cooler areas because it does not tolerate the heat. It’s best for USDA Hardiness Zones 5-7. In the landscape, grow in a moist, fertile, cool, well-drained soil and do not overwater. Plant in a sunny location but with protection during the hottest part of the day.
Propagate by leaf bud or root cuttings or by seed.
