Name: Parrotia persica
Common name: Persian ironwood
Description: P. persica is a multitrunk tree that grows 20-40 feet tall and 15-30 feet wide. New leaves begin as purple-red then turn dark green. Persian ironwood provides orange, yellow and red fall color. It’s a deciduous tree that features peeling bark.
Hardiness: USDA Hardiness Zones 5-8.
Landscape uses: Use as a shade tree, a street tree, or keep it pruned as a container tree. Grow in part shade to full sun. Once established, it’s drought tolerant.
Some cultivars: ‘Vanessa,’ ‘Henny’s Dwarf,’ ‘JL Columnar’ (Persian Spire), ‘Biltmore’ and ‘Persian Lace.’
