Name: Koelreuteria paniculata
Common Name: Goldenraintree
Description: K. paniculata grows to 30 feet tall and wide. It features an upright, rounded habit but spreads more with age. It’s one of the few trees to flower in mid-summer, when many green-yellow to bright yellow small flowers combine to form a foot-long large and showy inflorescence. The individual flowers do not open all at once and have a prolonged two-week bloom period. Clusters of lime-colored three- sided pods form in summer, and slowly change to beige then mature to medium brown by fall, lasting throughout the winter and persisting into the following spring.
Hardiness: USDA Hardiness Zones 5-9.
Culture: It performs best in full sun in moist, rich, deep, well-drained soils, but is adaptable to poor soils and compacted soils. Some reports of poor transplant success in the fall.
Propagation: By seeds or cuttings.
Attributes: It’s tolerant of heat, drought and pollution.
