Golden Ruby dwarf variegated barberry
LCN Selections’ Golden Ruby dwarf variegated barberry (Berberis thunbergii ‘Goruzam’ P.P. 16,203) is an eye-catching new variety that stands out with a stunning color transformation throughout the season. Spring foliage emerges a striking fluorescent orange, with leaves maturing to a burgundy maroon with a gold ring around the outer leaf margin in summer. Fall color is flame orange to brick red. This bold color combination adds drama in the garden against more subdued landscape plantings. Golden Ruby is very slow growing, reaching approximately 15 inches high and 24 inches wide, with a sparse fruit set. This easy-care plant will perform best in full sun and a well-drained soil.

Prunus sargentii ‘Hokkaido Normandale’
Available spring 2010, First Editions Spring Wonder Sargent cherry tree from Bailey Nurseries offers something to love all season long, even in USDA Hardiness Zone 4. Prunus sargentii ‘Hokkaido Normandale’ is a beautiful flowering cherry tree that has delicate, single-pink flowers in the spring that mature into small, reddish-black fruit. Its new leaves start out purple, turning shiny, dark green in the summer. The tree’s upright, vase-shaped form and polished, red-brown bark add to its three-season appeal. This hardy cherry tree is native to Japan and was selected by Harold Pellet and Normandale Community College.

Delta Jazz crape myrtle
The Southern Living Plant Collection announced exciting new plants for spring 2010 including Delta Jazz crape myrtle. A versatile medium size shrub, Delta Jazz features bright medium pink blooms contrasting brilliantly with dark burgundy capped leaves. Hardy to USDA Hardiness Zone 7, it does well in full sun to part shade when planted in well-drained soil. It grows 6-8 feet tall.

Ptilotus hybrid ‘Platinum Wallaby’
‘Platinum Wallaby’ from EuroAmerican Propagators has a long bloom period (nearly year-around in mild climates) and extremely long-lasting flower spikes. ‘Platinum Wallaby’ is well suited for low-water use landscapes as well as containers and is tolerant of high heat conditions. Plants grow best in full sun. ‘Platinum Wallaby’ grows to 12-18 inches high and wide.
