Spotted lanternfly meets its match in novel gaming app

The app, called Squishr, is a fun yet effective way to stop the invasive species in its tracks.

Per The Philadelphia Inquirer, a father from Philadelphia created an app urging participants to spot and kill the destructive spotted lanternfly. Brad Line, the creator, developed the game on the insistence of his two sons.

The spotted lanternfly is an invasive species, and it has wreaked havoc on Pennsylvania’s agricultural industry. Line’s app calls upon users to squash the bug, take a photo and share it within the app. Users with the most kills will appear on the app’s leader board, and they can also share maps so others may locate it. The game, called Squishr, is available for free on the App Store.

The app will help track data regarding the spotted lanternfly’s whereabouts and patterns, which may help get rid of the bug once and for all.
