When DCA Outdoor took over management of Rio Verde Plantas in September of 2018, the directive from ownership was to redesign the nursery to supply landscape grade material to the independent market as opposed to the retail mass merchant market. Hundreds of new varieties have been introduced into the production schedule. Millions of the legacy units have been sold, destroyed or brought up to quality standards. As of today, a majority the units in production are a part of the new production plan. However, the company has identified over one million units that don’t fit into that plan.
Tory Schwope, CEO of DCA Outdoor, made the decision that it is time to move forward.
“We are going to auction some amazing product because at some point, you have to turn the page,” Schwope said. “This has been a tremendous challenge trying to develop and manage two different product lines. I’m committed to putting our people in the best position to be successful and I’m really proud of how hard the team has worked to get through this difficult assignment.”
Schwope ran his first nursery stock auction in 2007 and this auction will be his fifteenth. He has run auctions in Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, Illinois and now Oregon.
“Nursery stock auctions have been a tremendously valuable tool for our organization over the years. They are never fun and rarely popular, but they have been very effective as a tool for us to move forward as an organization,” he said.
The online auction will take place from June 10 to June 24 at www.nurseryauction.com and will be facilitated by Reimold Horticultural Auction & Marketing.
