WESTBROOK, Conn. — A Connecticut-based wholesale plant grower is seeking federal bankruptcy protection from its creditors, according to court papers filed Dec. 18.

Clinton Nurseries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Dec. 18 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Haven, Ct. Under federal bankruptcy laws, Chapter 11 allows a company to keep operating while its owners seek to restructure their debt.

Clinton Nurseries, which is located on Pond Meadow Road in Westbrook, Ct. has been in business for 96 years and employs 84 people. The company’s current financial difficulties can be traced to a change that a large former customer made to its business model that dramatically reduced profit margins for Clinton Nurseries and other suppliers, according to court papers.
